I Can’t See a Previous Version of My Document in Craft

If you’re unable to see a previous version of your document using Version History, several factors could be the cause. Below are the most common reasons:


1. The Backup Was Created Outside Your Plan’s Retention Period

Craft’s version history is available for a limited time based on your subscription plan:

If the version you’re looking for is older than your plan’s retention period, it will no longer be accessible.


2. The Document Didn’t Meet the Backup Timing Requirement

  • Craft creates a snapshot every 60 minutes while you’re actively making changes.
  • If you didn’t continue editing the document for a full hour, a backup may not have been created.
  • For example:
    • If you made quick edits and closed the document within a few minutes, no backup would have been saved.

3. No Changes Were Made Since the Last Backup

  • Version history is only created when there are active changes to a document.
  • If you only viewed the document or made minor changes that didn’t meet the system’s threshold, a new version may not have been saved.

4. The Document Was Recently Created

  • If the document is new and hasn’t been edited for at least 60 minutes, there may not be any saved versions yet.
  • Craft starts tracking changes from the moment you begin editing, but the first backup will only occur after one hour of continued editing.

5. The Document or Space Was Deleted

  • If the entire document or space was deleted, version history will no longer be available unless restored from Recently Deleted within the allowed timeframe.

6. Technical Limitations or Sync Issues

  • Version history might not display correctly if there was an interruption in syncing between devices.
  • Check your internet connection and make sure Craft is up to date to avoid potential syncing problems.

What to Do If You Still Can’t Find a Version

  • Double-check the Info tab > View Backups in the right sidebar of the document.
  • Verify your subscription plan to ensure your retention period covers the timeframe you need.
