How to Start the Import

Open docs.craft.do/import/quip in your browser, and sign in to your Craft account if you aren’t already.

Get Your Quip Access Token

Craft connects to Quip with a personal access token that you generate yourself.

Open the Quip token page

Go to quip.com/dev/token while signed in to the Quip account you want to import from.

Generate and copy your token

Click Get Personal Access Token and copy the token that appears.
Your access token grants full access to everything in your Quip account. Don’t share it, and don’t post it anywhere public.
The token gives Craft access to everything your Quip account can see — your private documents, plus any shared and group folders you’re a member of. You don’t need to grant access to documents one by one.

Import Your Documents

Paste your access token

Paste the token into the field on the import page.

Choose your destination

Select the Craft Space where you want your Quip documents to appear. Optionally select a destination folder to keep the imported content together.

Configure options

Optionally toggle Include comments to bring your Quip comments across alongside your documents.

Start the import

Click Import. You’ll see a progress bar as your documents are imported. You can close the page at any time — the import will continue in the background.
Quip limits how quickly its data can be read. If your account is large, the import pauses and resumes on its own until everything is through — a few hundred documents can take fifteen minutes or more. You don’t need to keep the page open.

After the Import

Once complete, you’ll see a confirmation with a button that takes you to Craft, where you’ll find your imported documents.

What Craft Couldn’t Bring Over

Some things in Quip have no equivalent in Craft, and occasionally a file won’t download. Rather than leave you to spot that yourself, Craft lists anything it couldn’t fully carry over once the import finishes, along with the documents affected, so you can go and check them. You might see any of the following:
  • Documents that couldn’t be imported — chats and slide decks, or a document Quip wouldn’t return.
  • Images or attachments that couldn’t be downloaded — the document imported without them.
  • Live Apps imported as tables — their contents are there, but they’re no longer interactive.
  • Comments that couldn’t be imported — the document arrived without them.
  • Files attached to comments — the comment text came across, the attached file didn’t.
  • Comments that lost their place — they’re attached to the document instead of the passage they were written about.
A summary like this is normal, especially for large accounts, and your documents are already in Craft. It’s there so you know exactly what to look at, not to tell you something went wrong.
A chat or slide deck that wasn’t imported has no Craft document to open, so it’s listed by name only. Everything else links straight to the imported document.

What Comes Across

Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links, highlights, bulleted and numbered lists, checklists, tables, code blocks, dividers, and quotes.Quip has underline and Craft doesn’t, so underlined text arrives with a light grey highlight instead — the emphasis is preserved even though the exact styling isn’t.
Your folder structure is recreated in Craft, and documents you starred in Quip arrive starred.In Quip a document can sit in several folders at once. Craft puts each document in one, so an imported document lands in the first folder it was found in. Empty folders aren’t recreated.
Images and file attachments are downloaded and re-uploaded into Craft, so they keep working after the import — they aren’t just links back to Quip.
A Quip spreadsheet becomes a Craft table, so you can read and edit it in place. The original .xlsx workbook is also attached to the document, so nothing about the original is lost.
These become Craft collections, with your columns as a status property and each card carrying its status. Column colors carry over.
Quip date mentions become real Craft dates rather than plain text.
If you enable Include comments, comments and their replies come across with the original author names and timestamps, attached to the text they were written about.

Limitations

Most of these are named in the summary after your import, so you’ll know which documents were affected. The two marked below aren’t flagged, because there’s nothing missing for Craft to report.
  • Chats and slide decks aren’t imported. Craft has no equivalent for either, so Quip conversations and presentations are skipped. Documents and spreadsheets are imported.
  • Live Apps other than Kanban boards and Project Trackers — Calendars, for example — are imported as a plain table showing their contents. The information is there, but it’s no longer interactive.
  • Files attached to comments aren’t imported. The comment text still comes across; the attached file doesn’t.
  • Some comments may lose their place. If the text a comment was written about no longer exists in Quip’s export, the comment is attached to the document as a whole instead of to that passage. Nothing is lost, but it may not be where you expect.
  • Templates import as ordinary documents (not flagged). A Quip template arrives as a normal Craft document rather than a Craft template. All of its content is there — it just isn’t set up as a template in Craft.
  • Documents in the Quip trash aren’t imported (not flagged). Craft only sees the documents your Quip account holds outside the trash.
Importing only reads from Quip. Nothing in your Quip account is moved, edited, or deleted, so you can keep using it as normal and re-run the import if you need to.

Troubleshooting

Double-check that you copied the whole token from quip.com/dev/token. If you’re not sure the token you pasted is the current one, open that page again and copy the token it shows.
This means the token worked but Craft couldn’t see any documents through it. Make sure you generated the token while signed in to the right Quip account — if you have more than one, it’s easy to create a token for the wrong one.
This is usually Quip’s rate limits rather than a problem. The import pauses and picks up again by itself, and it keeps running after you close the page. Large accounts can take a while.
A document that lives in several Quip folders is placed in the first one found, so it may not be where you expect. If a document is missing entirely, check whether it’s a chat or a slide deck, which aren’t imported, and whether it’s in the Quip trash.
Try restarting the import. Documents that already came across won’t be duplicated. If the issue persists, contact support.
