Craft does not currently offer a built-in feature to lock documents for editing or apply password protection within the app itself. However, depending on your needs, there are a few things you should know about content privacy and alternatives to document locking.
What You Can Do
1. Control Sharing and Permissions
While you can’t lock a document for editing, you can manage who has access to it:
- Keep it private: By default, all documents are private unless explicitly shared.
- Set document permissions: When sharing a document, you can choose to give someone view-only access instead of editing rights.
This allows you to effectively prevent others from making changes to a document you’ve shared.
2. Publish with Passcode Protection
If you're publishing a document to the web, you can protect it with a passcode:
- Click Share > Publish to Web.
- Enable Require Passcode.
- Share the passcode only with those you want to view the content.
Note: This only applies to published documents, not documents within your private or team spaces.
What’s Not Possible (Yet)
- ❌ You cannot password-protect or lock a document within Craft’s editor.
- ❌ There is no “read-only mode” for your own editing access.
- ❌ Craft does not currently support locking individual pages or blocks from accidental edits.
Looking Ahead
We understand that the ability to lock or protect documents is important for many users, especially for collaborative or sensitive work. While not currently available, we’ve received this feedback and it's something we're considering for future improvements.
